- What is Machine Translation?
Machine Translation (MT) is a translation performed by computers using various algorithms without any human verification. Computers do not have any “understanding” of the text, and the translation quality varies from topic to topic, from document to document, and even from phrase to phrase. Realistically, even the best MT provides only a gist of the source content, and no serious decision should be made based on the MT result alone.
- What is Post-Editing?
Since MT quality varies from sentence to sentence, the user who needs to rely on what has been “translated,” should add human revision. To accomplish this, STS provides two levels of post-editing: light post-editing (LPE) and full post-editing (FPE). LPE is intended to provide accurate terminology and improve a translation’s legibility. FPE provides the correct syntax and word order; it is close to a human translation.
- What is Human Translation with Editing?
It is possible for even highly professional translators with clear understanding of the source topic to make mistakes. Therefore, for the vital documents, such as drug descriptions or documents to be submitted to a court, a second human translator is employed to check and confirm the accuracy and style of the translation.
- How to choose the right type of translation for your purpose?
Generally, the more important the document is, the higher the level of translation that should be used. The minimal cost of MT allows for a quick understanding of the document gist and determining whether it is relevant and warrants refinement; that means that MT is good for filtering out the irrelevant documents. For relevant documents, the readability and comprehension of MT should be improved by human post-editing. The highest translation level, human translation with editing, should be used for documents where absolute accuracy is vital, e.g., drug descriptions, documents intended for notarization or submission to a court.
In other words, translation decisions should be made based on the intended use and content of the document.
- How many languages does STS supports?
Currently, STS provides MT in 60 language pairs, and human translation in more than 100 of the world’s most common languages. Others can be arranged when requested.
